The wife of the Wisconsin kayaker who faked his own death moves to end their marriage

The wife of the Watertown man who faked his own drowning in Green Lake this summer, so he could leave her and their children to meet a woman in Eastern Europe, filed court documents Thursday seeking to end their marriage.

Online court records indicate Emily Borgwardt filed a petition in Dodge County Circuit Court seeking a legal separation from Ryan Borgwardt. According to the petition, the marriage is “irretrievably broken.”

The separation petition states that the couple has been married for 22 years and Emily wants sole custody of their three teenaged children.

Ryan became the focus of national news this fall after it was discovered he faked a drowning in August, but was found to have moved to Europe. Green Lake County authorities were in contact with him and urged him to come back to face the mess he created here, which he did on December 11th.
He is facing Obstruction charges in the faked death case.
