Two people rescued from burning apartment building

Two people needed to be rescued from an apartment building that caught fire in the City of Kiel Monday night, January 1, 2024.

Just before 8 PM, calls started coming in saying smoke and flames were visible at the east Chicago Street apartment, and when the first units arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the front of the building with people evacuating.

Two people unable to evacuate needed to be rescued through windows.

Kiel Fire Department quickly upgraded the call to a Mutual Aid Box Alarm which drew in additional firefighters from seven other departments. Five residents were transported to a local hospital to be treated for what has been reported as non life-threatening-injuries related to the fire and one emergency responder suffered a minor injury while at the scene.

Its unknown what started the fire at this time but the Manitowoc County Fire Investigators Unit as well as the State Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate.
