What is the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla?

  • We are a division under the Dept. of Homeland Security.
  • Purpose is to provide trained crews and facilities to augment the Coast Guard and enhance safety and security, of our ports, waterways, and coastal regions & support Coast Guard operational, administrative, and logistical Requirements
  • Our main focus in FDL is to promote and improve Recreational Boating Safety. Teaching Boat Safety Classes and perform Boat Safety Checks.
  • Our Flotilla is always looking for new members to join us!

Upcoming Boater Safety Course – DNR Registration Required

  • April 17 – In person registration and materials pick-up

from 6-8pm at the Fond du Lac Yacht Club.

  • April 22nd, 24th, 29th and May 1st   Classes run from 6pm to 9pm.
  • Cost is $10 for materials – Kid’s and adults.
  • (Anyone Born after January 1st 1989 has to have a Boat Safety Certificate to legally operate a boat under power.)
  • We strongly encourage parents to have Youth take a live taught safety class vs taking it online. 

Boat Safety Checks performed by US Coast Guard Auxiliary –

What are they?

  • A FREE check of your boat’s compliance with local, state and federal requirements… 
  • This is Informative, and there are no consequences if your boat doesn’t pass.  The US Coast Guard Auxiliary does not take any enforcement action.
  • Boat Safety Checks typically take about 15 minutes to complete. 
  • Receive a yearly sticker upon a successful inspection.

What Type of Items Are Checked during a Boat Safety Check?

  • Life Jackets (PFD’s)
  • Registration and Numbering
  • Navigation Lights are operational
  • Ventilation on Engine
  • Fire Extinguishers in good shape and meet requirements.
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Battery Secured and Connections Covered:

(Wisconsin State Law requires both terminals to be covered.)

National Safe Boating Week – May 17th-23rd 2025.

We have partnered with Fleet Farm to promote and kick-off National Safe Boating Week. Our Flotilla will be staffing a tent in the parking lot with displays and information and will be on hand answer your questions.  

We will also be performing free Boat Safety Checks in the Fleet Farm parking lot in Fond du Lac.
