WIAA Accepting Applications for 2026-27 Student-Athlete Leadership Team

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) is accepting applications for its 2026-27 Student-Athlete Leadership Team, a statewide group of student-athletes who serve as ambassadors for their peers and provide input to the association.

The WIAA created SALT to ensure student-athletes have a direct connection to the association’s work and decision-making and to keep the WIAA aligned with the evolving needs of schools and students across Wisconsin. The program is designed to elevate student perspectives, strengthen education-based athletics and introduce student-athletes to leadership opportunities within school sports and the broader sports industry.

The program gives student-athletes an advisory voice in WIAA processes. Members share feedback with WIAA staff and the Board of Control on issues affecting student-athletes statewide. SALT members also help advance the WIAA’s purpose and mission through student-led initiatives and service.

“Being part of SALT has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school career,” said Ginger Gurndt, the team’s current president and a senior at Suring High School. “We have the opportunity to represent student-athletes across Wisconsin and make a real difference on issues that matter to us, from mental health awareness to sportsmanship to school spirit. Having our voices heard at the state level is powerful, and I encourage any student-athlete who is passionate about leadership to apply.”

Student-athletes entering their junior year are eligible to apply. Representation from each WIAA district is based on the percentage of member schools in that district. Applicants must complete an application and submit a short introductory video.

“The reason SALT matters is simple: We serve schools and student-athletes, and the best way to stay connected to their needs is to hear directly from them,” said Stephanie Hauser, WIAA executive director. “These student leaders help strengthen education-based athletics, improve our work through real-time feedback and create new opportunities for student-athletes statewide — from service initiatives to an annual student leadership conference.”
