Wisconsin DMV To Issue Updated, Harder To Fake Driver Licenses

The Wisconsin DMV is announcing a new drivers license and identification card design with updated security features.

The new cards debuted Monday, June 5, 2023 with new design elements built within the cards to make them more resistant to fraud.

WisDOT Secretary Craig Thompson stated “The Wisconsin DMV continues to stay on the leading edge of technology by incorporating the next generation of updated security features into our driver licenses and ID cards.”

The new cards feature:

Artistic, hard-to-replicate designs of key Wisconsin features – like the Wisconsin State Capitol and flag, woven throughout the card, creating a more secure, customized card.

Also Transparent windows are visible on the card’s right edge and back bottom edge. This advanced manufacturing process allows the clear ribbon to flow right off the edge
of the card and is integrated with cardholder data. Wisconsin is the first to have this unique security feature.

And also a distinct ‘flipping effect feature which is an embossed feature just above the ribbon. When angling the card one way, you see a secondary photo. While at another angle you see the month and year of birth. The DOT says this unique feature is hard to duplicate and counterfeit.

The DOT says fees for renewing to the upgraded cards will not change. Current cards which debuted in September 2015 will remain valid until their expiration date.
