WLA and Springs Battle For Flyway Football Championship
By: Nick Van Nocker
Friday night at Winnebago Lutheran Academy High School St. Mary’s Springs and WLA battle for bragging rights in the city of Fond du Lac and more importantly the Flyway Conference Football Championship. Both teams will enter the game undefeated on the season. Springs had a challenge last week as Mayville took the lead in the 4th quarter before running back J.T. Koenigs ran for an 11 yard TD run to give the Ledgers the lead and ultimately went onto win the game 26-21.
WLA played host to North Fond du Lac for homecoming in which the Orioles were out to ruin the season of WLA. Both teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter before the Vikings ran away with the victory 54-18 last Saturday. WLA coach Kevin Loehr said his team had a lot of confidence heading into the season and had belief they would be challenging for a conference championship. WLA is led by 3 year quarterback Sam Loehr leads the conference in passing yards. He is a candidate for conference player of the year. The Vikings are big upfront and the defense has been solid led by senior William “Chop” Simmons, Marcus Christensen, and Mason Faust. Coach Loehr says he likes how his team is playing heading into this conference championship game.
St. Mary’s Springs coach Bob Hyland says he could see this as a slug fest between the two schools. The teams preparation has not changed because of the big matchup the team is business as usual. Getting a conference championship is what coach Hyland says “what you compete for the entire year.” The Ledgers defense has been tough to get yards off of this year. Quarterback Max Bauer 3rd in the conference in passing yards and second in TD passes.
KFIZ’s Shawn Kiser will have updates of WLA and Springs during the Fond du Lac Oshkosh West broadcast on Friday night on NewsTalk 1450 KFIZ and 100.7FM.
