Woman Dies, Man Injured after Fall into Quarry in Winnebago County

A woman is dead and her husband injured after they fell
into a quarry in the Town of Poygan in Winnebago County Monday afternoon. The
Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that emergency crews
were called to the 8000 block of County Highway D just after 3 pm for a report of
two people falling into a quarry. The release says the man and woman, a married
couple from Oshkosh, had been visiting a nearby business, when they left on
foot. They ended up on the top ridge of an adjacent quarry where they fell around
40 to 50 feet. A friend found them at the bottom of the quarry. The 31-year-old
woman was dead when rescuers reached her. The 31-year-old man was flown to a hospital
by ThedaStar Helicopter. His condition is currently unknown. The Sheriff’s
Office believes the couple was not familiar with the terrain. Authorities are
continuing their investigation into the incident.
