Work continues to repair damaged crosswalk in busy Fond du Lac intersection

The first phase of repairing the damaged crosswalk at the intersection of Main and Johnson streets is complete with the northbound lane and eastbound turn lane opening back up this morning. The lanes were closed for two days while the bricks that made up the crosswalk were taken out and replaced with concrete after being damaged by Monday’s heat.

Today the southbound lane as well as the westbound turn lane on the north side of the intersection will close so crews can complete the new crosswalk. The closure will begin at 7:00 am and remain closed until tomorrow afternoon.

Social media has come alive after the bricks were damaged with many expressing their displeasure in the design that has been a part of Fond du Lac for years.

Many in the community were confused as to how the bricks could have popped out when it was thought the crosswalks at that intersection were replaced with a stamped design on red colored concrete that had the appearance of bricks but weren’t really bricks. This replacement most are thinking of took place in 2019. KFIZ reached out to the city to get an explanation.

We were told three of the four crosswalks at the intersection were replaced in May of 2019. The fourth crossing remained bricks as the condition of the northern portion of the intersection was in good shape and it allowed a lane for vehicles to go around the construction of the 2019 closure to detour traffic with the least amount of impact as possible.

Then in 2024 When the lighthouse mosaic bricks in the middle of the intersection were removed, they again kept the northern section, including the crosswalk, in place for the same reason as it was in decent enough shape and it afforded room to shift traffic over during this removal.

Now with this replacement, all four crosswalks will be rid of the bricks.
