World Snowshoe Racing Championships in Calumet County – First time in Wisconsin
A Calumet County City is hosting, for the first time in Wisconsin, the World Snowshoe Championships this weekend.
The event is an annual international competition for snowshoe running, organized by the World Snowshoe Federation, bringing together elite athletes and enthusiasts to race on snow-covered trails, featuring various distances and categories for different ages and abilities. The event has been held annually since 2006 and has only once before been held in the United States.
The event is being held at the Ariens Nordic Center in Brillion, which was established by the Ariens Company to create a world-class Nordic sports venue in the Midwest offering Olympic-level features in a community setting.
The snowshoe championship races get underway today at noon with a U.S. Championship 5k race and tomorrow at 10 am for a World Championship 10k race.
Winners in men’s and women’s categories get cash prizes ranging from $500 up to $3000.
The event winds up Sunday with a series of Kids Snowshoe Races and an open 5k race.
The event is expected to draw nearly 2000 spectators and contenders.
