Wrong way driver crashes, closes I-41 for nearly 5 hours
The southbound lanes of I-41 in Oshkosh were closed for much of the night after a wrong way driver crashed there.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, the Winnebago County Dispatch Center began taking multiple calls of the wrong way driver who was northbound in the southbound lanes.
Less than two minutes later those calls turned into reports of a crash just north of Witzel Avenue.
First units on scene advised the SUV was flipped with a female trapped inside, as well as a semi involved, that was blocking all three lanes.
A female driver of the SUV, who was said to be the only occupant, was conscious and talking to 1st responders as she was extricated from the vehicle.
In addition to Oshkosh Ambulance, Oshkosh Fire Department Haz Mat was called to the scene due to the semi’s gas tank being ruptured and diesel fuel spilling out.
The highway was closed until just before 4:30 a.m. while crews investigated and cleaned up the scene.
