You liking this dry weather? Good, ’cause there’s more on the way
Coming on the heels of an absolute perfect weather holiday weekend, one may ask… “Can it get any better than this?” Well, not really, but more of the same is just as good.
After a little warm up mid week, we’ll see a cold front come through that will spark a line of showers Thursday into Friday, but other than that, it should remain mostly dry through the next two weeks.
This is thanks to what is called an Omega Block pattern that will persist over the central United States over the next couple weeks. It’s called this because the jet stream at this time resembles the Greek letter Omega, in that it dips into the southwest, then moves north up and over the Northern Plains and Midwest before dropping back south in the New England States and East Coast.
This pattern is conducive for creating high pressure systems over the central portion of the country which equates to dry weather.
If it were in the depths of summer, it would also mean near record heatwaves as this pattern allows the sun to really bake the area with no weather systems to allow for a cool down of Canadian air to sweep through with any cold fronts. You don’t have to go back too far to see this in action as just over a week ago, we had the same pattern in place with heat advisories for much of the state. However, with the sun losing it’s higher angle in the sky as it makes it’s way south, as is normal with the approach of fall and winter, it loses it’s ability to send it’s true heating power earthward. Therefore, we end up still warmer than normal, but that “warmer” is much more tolerable.
Enjoy this dry spell while it lasts as you get your end of summer yard work done and venture out to your local pumpkin patch with the kids or cozy up to “hoodie weather” at night, because extended models are showing a change in the pattern soon after this 2 week period ends.
