Youth invited to capture ‘Reading Dragons’ with new reading program at the Fond du Lac Public Library

Can you capture the dragons?

Youth in kindergarten through fifth grade will be able to capture their own magical creatures starting Oct. 1 while strengthening their reading skills through a new program offered by the Fond du Lac Public Library.

With Reading Dragons & Friends, kids will be able to start collecting exciting trading cards featuring dragons and other amazing creatures. Each month, youth can take home up to four trading cards: one for each hour of reading recorded. Cards will feature fun, new designs kids will want to bring home.

These cards will be for more than just collecting. Youth can challenge each other to Reading Dragon tournaments for bragging rights. Similar to rock-paper-scissors, red dragon cards beat green dragon cards, green beats blue, and blue beats red.

Reading Dragons & Friends will be a lot of fun for youth while keeping them motivated to reinforce one of the most important life skills: literacy.

Not sure what to read? Library staff at the Fond du Lac Public Library are always happy to recommend new titles for any age of reader.

Reading Dragons compliments other reading programs that already exist, and fills a gap for youth. Kids heading toward kindergarten can participate in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, while new teens entering sixth grade through high school can join 100 Books Before Graduation. With the addition of Reading Dragons, now children will have new motivation to build reading skills throughout their early years.

The Reading Dragons program was originally developed by the Dover Public Library in Ohio and is based on the idea that adding a gaming element to reading encourages participation and engagement.
