100 mph driver who thought they were on a different highway charged with OWI
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday, January 26, 2026, that they took a Waupun female into custody Sunday afternoon, after a deputy with the sheriff’s office spotted the vehicle she was driving, eastbound on State Highway 23 near Townline Road, traveling in excess of the posted 55 mph speed limit.
The deputy activated his radar and initially observed speeds in the 90 mph range. The vehicle continued to accelerate, and speed of 100 mph was observed on the radar.
The deputy also observed the vehicle briefly cross the centerline on two occasions prior to initiating a traffic stop.
The deputy pulled the 34-year-old driver over and began an investigation where he observed indicators consistent with alcohol impairment. The woman stated she thought she was driving on Interstate 41 and was headed towards Waupun.
A search of the vehicle revealed drug paraphernalia and an empty liquor bottle. Based on the totality of circumstances, the deputy developed probable cause to arrest the woman for Operating While Intoxicated. She was booked into the Fond du Lac County Jail for 1st offense Operating While Intoxicated.
