New Holstein High School evacuated after smokey science experiment

Firefighters from multiple departments were sent to the New Holstein High School yesterday morning for a report of smoke in the building.

School staff and a police officer on the scene reported the smoke in the hallways at about 10:30.

Due to the size of the building and the number of people involved, an automatic response was requested from Chilton, Kiel, and St. Anna fire departments.

Students and staff were evacuated while crews worked to determine the cause of the smoke which ended up just being a smokey experiment being done in a science room. Authorities say the chemistry experiment was being performed under a ventilation hood, though some of the smoke seeped into the building.

Firefighters ventilated the building and students were allowed to re enter.
