Keep the wreath green campaign sees it’s first red light
If you’ve driven past Fire Station #1 on south main street in Fond du Lac, you may have noticed a wreath with all green lights out front. This isn’t simply just a Christmas decoration however.
The wreath is representing the amount of fires that occur during the cold holiday season, with a red bulb being swapped out for a green one for every fire in the city limits. The goal is to keep the wreath green but it already received it’s first red bulb Monday morning after a couple trash receptacles caught fire, doing damage to the exterior of a house in the 700 block of Martin Avenue.
The department says they do this during the holidays to bring awareness to the added dangers of fire during this time of year as people may be using space heaters, extra power strips and extension cords for holiday lighting, candles, Christmas trees that can dry out and become a fire hazard, and added cooking of Christmas baked goods and family gatherings with large meals being prepared.
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue stresses the importance of holiday fire safety because of the large number of fires that tend to occur during this time. This program is a reminder to everyone in our community to use proper care while celebrating this holiday season.
The keep the wreath green campaign runs from Thanksgiving through new years day.
