More Wisconsin lawmakers receive ‘suspicious’ substances by mail
By WPR Staff
More elected leaders including both U.S. Senators from Wisconsin have reported their offices received packages containing a suspicious substance.
Republican Ron Johnson and Democrat Tammy Baldwin both posted online saying that the packages and substances inside matched similar packages that have been sent to politicians and elections officials across the country.
Last week federal authorities reported that they were investigating mailings to congressional and election offices nationwide, including the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
Since then, Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan of Madison, the Marquette University Law School and Democratic U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore of Milwaukee all reported similar mailings.
Senator Johnson said in a statement that the return address on the package his office received matched the address on similar packages that have been sent to politicians and elections officials across the country.
In a statement last week, the FBI said it and the Postal Inspection Service were “investigating a series of suspicious mailings sent to various addresses nationwide, including Secretary of State offices and their related election offices.”
“Some of the letters contained an unknown substance and we are working closely with our law enforcement partners to respond to each incident,” the statement read. “We are also working with our partners to identify the individual or individuals responsible for the letters.”
