Ground Broken on Highway 23 Expansion, First Phase of Construction to Begin Monday

Ground has been broken and the expansion of Highway 23 between Fond du Lac and Plymouth is one step closer to reality after a groundbreaking ceremony held Wednesday in Sheboygan County. State and local leaders met for the groundbreaking at the Wade House Historic Site in Greenbush to mark the beginning of the project which has been a long time coming. “This groundbreaking is a major milestone in a process that has gone on for several years, too many in our opinion,” Department of Transportation Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. “But we are not here to rehash the past, this is about the future. A safer future for drivers between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac, and a more efficient future for millions of dollars of goods and services that travel on this highway every day.”

The project will reconstruct 19.1 miles of Highway 23 between Highway 151 in Fond du Lac and County Highway P near Plymouth, and Governor Tony Evers announced at the event that the first phase of the project will begin this coming Monday, May 13th. Work will begin in Sheboygan County and end in Fond du Lac County. Evers says the Highway 23 project is a great example of working together to reach a common goal. “Whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, improving the quality and safety of our roads should be something we can all agree on,” he said. “It’s why the success of investing in projects like Wisconsin 23 is a tremendous example of how partnership and collaboration can lead to safer roads, and economic growth that depends on everybody.” Evers added that the project will “increase safety, while benefiting economic growth, all the way from Fond du Lac to Sheboygan.”
