Area of Sheboygan evacuated for what was thought to be an explosive device

Tense moments in Sheboygan yesterday as a suspicious item, thought to possibly be an explosive, was found in the central part of the city.

Sheboygan Police Officers received a call shortly before 8:45 a.m. regarding the item in the 1300 block of New York Avenue. Authorities evacuated nearby residents and temporarily closed State Highway 28 between Pennsylvania Avenue and Wisconsin Avenue as a precaution.

The Milwaukee County bomb squad responded and determined the device was not an explosive and posed no danger to the public.

A 42-year-old Sheboygan man said to be involved with the item was arrested following the ordeal for what police say was for multiple offenses. The area was reopened up shortly after 1 PM.
