Artic air finally retreats – no major winter storms likely through extended forecast

An approaching low pressure in the form of an Alberta Clipper moving in from the northwest today, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, has turned our winds out of the south, finally after days of northwest flow kept us in an artic airmass. The southerly winds are returning more seasonable temperatures to the area today, but that also means a return of moisture in the air, and when combined with a trailing cold front behind the clipper, we will likely see some snow as a result. The system isn’t terribly strong, and with very dry air in place, we shouldn’t see anything more than flurries to very light snow with very little accumulation.
As of Wednesday morning the snow is extending from central Iowa into central and northern Wisconsin, and moving east. This should introduce flurries later Wednesday morning and they will have the chance of sticking around into the night-time hours.
After this clipper passes by tonight, we’ll see a slight warming trend into the first half of the weekend, then a quick cool down Sunday before things warm back up, maybe even seeing mid to upper 30s by Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week.
