Brewers Spring Training Report – 3/5/2024
By: Nick Van Nocker – KFIZ Sports
On the field it was a slow start to spring training for the Brewers as new manager Pat Murphy as he gets a look at a lot of the younger players that are the future of the crew. We’ve seen Sal Frelick get playing time at third base and a long look at Jackson Chourio at the plate with 22 at bats for far this spring and 7 games in the outfield. As last week drew to an end we started to see some of the regulars in the line up which included Christian Yelich and our first look at Rhys Hoskins who is coming off an injury plagued 2023. Both players look healthy and ready to contribute early in the season. With the trade of Corbin Burnes new ace Freddy Peralta got his first spring action going 3 innings giving up 5 hits and three runs. He was followed up by our first look at D.L. Hall who was traded to the Brewers part of the Burnes trade to the Orioles. Hall looked good going 2 innings give up no hits and striking out 1 batter.
After spending time in Arizona last week here are a few of Nick’s Notes:
- I think Pat Murphy will be active on the bases. The team has a ton of speed with Chourio and Frelick assuming both of them make the opening day roster. The moment Chourio made it on base in Sunday afternoon’s game against the Diamondbacks he was instantly on the move. Other players that give them the ability to steal bases include Christian Yelich, Brice Turang and Garrett Mitchell.
- Christian Arroyo who was signed in the off season on a minor league deal could be someone that makes this team. He has been getting a look over at third base this spring. So far he is batting .333 and played in three games two of them over the weekend.
- Joey Wiemer has modified his swing but the results have not shown. He only has 1 hit over 18 at bats. Look for Wiemer to start the season at AAA Nashville as he continues to work out his swing.
- Great story – Brewer Hicklen who was signed to a minor league contract in the offseason after being released from the Phillies minor league system. Friday hit a homerun in the bottom of the 8 inning to break the tie and give the Brewers the lead and ultimately the win over the Padres. He’s batting .300 in the spring and spent most of 2023 in AAA.
