Community Event: Suicide by Sextortion – A Father’s Story

A Michigan man is joining forces with the Fond du Lac Police Department to bring a message to the Fond du Lac community, advising the dangers of internet sextortion amongst teens.

John DeMay will share the heartbreaking story of his 17-year-old son, Jordan, who lost his life to online sextortion at a presentation September 24th, at the Fond du Lac High School.

Generally, online sextortion involves a criminal posing as a peer to teens, and after gaining some trust on a social media platform, will pursued the teen to send a revealing photo or video. Once the media is sent, the criminal shows their true intent and demands money or they will release the photo to the teen’s friends, family and school classmates.

Often with overwhelming shame, fear, and confusion, teens won’t ask for help, and feel with no other way out, will commit suicide, sometimes within hours of the incident happening.

The presentation will start out with the Fond du Lac Police Department sharing insights on local sextortion trends, prevention strategies, and ways parents can safeguard their children online.

After the main talk from DeMay, the night will conclude with an discussion panel featuring DeMay and the Fond du Lac Police Department.

The presentation will run from 6-8 PM.

Because of sensitive topics, Parental Discretion is Advised, and the talk is not recommended for children under 10.
