Dodge County Sheriff’s Office Now Responsible For 24/7 Protection In Lomira

The Village of Lomira has undergone some changes as to how law enforcement patrols the area.

As of March 1st, the Lomira Police Department has been dissolved and the officer that patrolled the village 8-12 hours per day has joined on with the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office. In return, the sheriff’s office has assigned 3 deputies that will now patrol Lomira full time with one of the officers also doubling as a school resource officer.

While this sounds like a drastic change, Sheriff Dale Schmidt says “It is important to understand that the Lomira Police Department has never been a full-time law enforcement agency and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has always been responsible for law enforcement services within the village when the police department was not on duty.

Sergeant Donald Counard has been assigned to lead the law enforcement efforts within the Village of Lomira and will oversee the deputies assigned. Counard is a 28-year law enforcement veteran who has excelled in the area of community policing. Sheriff Schmidt says he has worked in small communities before coming to the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Codey Bratz has also been assigned to work as a deputy in the village. Bratz comes to Dodge County after a short career in another sheriff’s office and has been a member of the sheriff’s office patrol division.

Rounding out the 3 officers is Deputy Jay Thielmann who will be assigned SRO duties. Thielmann formerly was a probation and parole officer and is currently a patrol deputy working third shift.
