Fighter jets again to train in skies above

Local residents will again be hearing military fighter jets in the skies above, as there will be an increase in flight activity over central Wisconsin June 1st – 12th due to the 2026 Sentry North exercise based out of Volk Field in Juneau County.

F-35s, F-16s, and other military aircraft are scheduled to train between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.

Aircraft flying above 30,000 feet are authorized by the FAA to operate at supersonic speeds within the Volk Military Operating Area, which may result in sonic booms at ground level.

Multiple sonic booms were heard in the last couple training exercises resulting in numerous 911 calls where people called to report something blew up, without actually seeing anything. Local 911 dispatchers put out a statement to NOT call these loud booms in as an explosion unless you actually see something blowing up.
