Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office releases infrared images of Lake Winnebago open water

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office has chimed in with their concern over the dangerous ice conditions on Lake Winnebago this year, just days before the 2025 sturgeon spearing season is set to start.
Using Forward looking infrared images, the department posted on their Facebook page, showing the warmer open water pockets on the lake right now. The department says ice in the middle of the lake isn’t a problem and in many areas is over a foot thick, but the more shallow areas around the edge have the open water.
The department referenced reports of multiple vehicles, ATVs and UTVs that have gone through the ice on these cracks and holes and urges anyone looking to head out for any ice fishing or spearing, to check with local fishing clubs and their up to date information on the ice conditions.
