Fond du Lac Loses Heartbreaker to Appleton North

Fond du Lac jumped out to an early lead Friday night against Appleton North and appeared poised for a big road victory, but a series of costly turnovers and a late blocked extra point resulted in a heartbreaking 14-13 defeat.

The Cardinals struck first when quarterback Eli Michelwicz connected with Henry Vokes on a touchdown pass, giving Fond du Lac an early 7-0 advantage. The defense made the lead stand throughout the first quarter and deep into the second as Fond du Lac controlled the tempo of the game.

Appleton North caught a break later in the second quarter when a bad snap sailed over the head of the Fond du Lac punter. The mishap gave the Lightning possession at the one-yard line, and North quickly capitalized with a touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7.

Turnovers proved to be the difference on the night. Fond du Lac committed four turnovers, including a costly lost fumble by Brady Schmidt deep in Cardinals territory. The turnover gave Appleton North another short field, and the Lightning took advantage by scoring a second touchdown to take a 14-7 lead.

Despite the setbacks, Fond du Lac refused to quit. Trailing by seven late in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals pieced together a clutch scoring drive. Schmidt redeemed himself by punching in a 9-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to one point and bringing Fond du Lac within a kick of tying the game.

However, disaster struck on the extra point attempt. The kick came out low and was blocked by an Appleton North defender, preserving the Lightning’s 14-13 advantage.

Fond du Lac’s hopes then rested on recovering an onside kick, but Appleton North secured possession and ran out the clock, handing the Cardinals a tough one-point loss.

While the Cardinals showed resilience in battling back late, four turnovers and special teams miscues ultimately proved too much to overcome as Appleton North escaped with the 14-13 victory. Fond du Lac will look to clean up those mistakes and bounce back in its next week at home against Appleton East
