Fond du Lac Police give safety tips for upcoming trick or treating

With Halloween celebrations underway, the Fond du Lac Police Department is reminding families and drivers to take a few extra precautions to keep trick-or-treaters safe.

Police recommend choosing costumes that are easy to see in the dark. Bright colors and reflective tape can help children stand out, while flashlights or glow sticks make them more visible to drivers.

Parents should also make sure costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Face paint may be a safer alternative to masks that could restrict a child’s vision.

Children should trick-or-treat with friends, have an adult accompany younger children, and stick to familiar neighborhoods. Whenever possible, use sidewalks and cross streets at intersections or crosswalks. Children should look both ways and make sure drivers see them before crossing.

And police remind everyone before anyone digging into their candy, a trusted adult should inspect the treats. Avoid anything that’s unwrapped, damaged or suspicious.

Police also ask motorists to slow down in residential neighborhoods, put away distractions and watch carefully for children near parked vehicles, driveways and intersections.

City of Fond du Lac trick or treating will be this Saturday from 3:30-5:30 pm.
