Grothman to introduce act against stadium tax

Congressman Glenn Grothman announced Wednesday, April 9, 2025, he was introducing the No Tax Subsidies for Stadiums Act, which would end the practice of allowing professional sports teams to use tax-exempt municipal bonds to fund stadium construction.

Grothman says the provision originally allowed local governments to fund essential public infrastructure projects like schools and hospitals, and that While sports infrastructure can add value to communities, taxpayer dollars shouldn’t have to subsidize these projects. If these types of stadiums are worth building, the teams should seek investments in the free market, without asking for an involuntary discount from taxpayers.

Grothman says over $4.3 billion has been lost in federal revenue since 2000 because of the stadium projects.
