Groundbreaking ceremony celebrates SSM Health CancerCare facility expansion

SSM Health in Fond du Lac held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the expansion of its cancer care facility at 480 E. Division Street Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

The event celebrated the beginning of expansion construction, which will enhance access to cancer care for patients across the region.

As the only accredited cancer center in the area, SSM Health Cancer Care has seen changes and growth during its 30 years in its existing facility, seeing a significant increase in patients, overall services, and technology.

SSM Health Fond du Lac Market president Shane Smith opened the ceremony, saying “This expansion project is more than just bricks and mortar – it’s a bold step forward in our mission to deliver exceptional care that is patient-focused, convenient, and compassionate. It’s a reflection of our ongoing commitment to innovation, stewardship, and healing.”

The ceremony featured remarks from SSM Health leaders, caregivers, and community partners, including Sue Anderson, SSM Health Wisconsin regional president, who emphasized the importance of local access to cancer care. “Cancer affects our neighbors, our coworkers, our friends, and our families,” Anderson says. “This newly expanded facility will continue to build on our cancer care’s 30-plus year history – and more – under one roof. Local access saves lives.”

Michael Jones, MD, an SSM Health Cancer Care hematologist/medical oncologist, highlighted the facility’s legacy and future impact. “For more than 30 years, this facility has been a cornerstone of cancer
care in our region,” Dr. Jones shares. “With this expansion, we’re enhancing locally delivered care to better meet the needs of our community. It brings comfort, familiarity, and trust.”

“This ground is sacred,” according to Elle Yeates, SSM Health Mission Integration regional director, during the invocation. “May this center become a beacon of hope for those facing the challenges of cancer, and a sanctuary for families who are walking beside them.”

The $15 million expansion project reaffirms SSM Health’s ongoing commitment to comprehensive, local cancer care in Fond du Lac and surrounding areas.

Fond du Lac’s CD Smith Construction serves as the project’s general contractor and project completion is anticipated by spring of 2027.
