Lit cigarette from dumpster diver may have started dumpster and garage on fire

Oshkosh police and fire responded to an early morning dumpster fire Saturday, May 3, 2025, that had spread to a series of garages at the Brookside North Apartments in the 1700 block of Robin Avenue.

Upon arrival fire crews found the garage and dumpster heavily involved in flames.

Police found a man walking away from the scene carrying items that may have come from the dumpster. When questioned the man admitted to being in the dumpster looking for items and that he may have possibly dropped a lit cigarette while he was in it. It’s unknown if police will be charging the man with anything.
