Local Sports – Monday, October 1st, 2012

The Green Bay Packers rallied to beat the winless New Orleans Saints 28-27 on Sunday at Lambeau Field.  Aaron Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson on an 11-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter for the game winning score. New Orleans was given an extra chance to win the game on the next kickoff at Darren Sproles fumbled the ball, which was recovered the Packers, but the refs ruled him down and Green Bay had no challnges.  Garrett Hartley then drilled a field goal to give New Orleans the lead, but they were called for holding.  He missed his next attempt and the Packers ran out the clock.  Aaron Rodgers threw for 319 yards and 4 TDs in the game. Drew Brees threw for 446 yards and 3 TD in the loss.  He’s thrown a TD pass in 47 straight games which ties Johnny Unitas for the all-time record.  James Jones caught a pair of TD passes and Greg Jennings caught a TD but left the game when he re-aggravated a groin injury.  The Packers travel to Indianapolis next Sunday.


Alabama remains #1 in the week’s AP College Football Poll.  Oregon is #2, followed by Florida State, LSU and George.  FSU and LSU are flip-flopped in the Coaches Poll.  The Badgers are unranked but got 6 votes in the Coaches Poll.  UW hosts Illinois on Saturday afternoon.


The Brewers were officially eliminated from playoff contention with a 7-0 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday.  Houston starter Jordan Lyles threw his first career shutout and hit his first career home run in the game.  Mike Fiers took the loss.  The Brewers open their final series of the season tonight as they host San Diego at Miller Park.  Coverage begins at 6:35pm on KFIZ.


The Orioles, Yankees, and Rangers all clinched playoff spots on Sunday.


The Europeans matched the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history on Sunday rallying from a 10-6 deficit to win 14.5 to 13.5.  Europe won 8 matches and halved another to retain the cup. 


Today is media day across the NBA with teams getting together for the first time this year. First practices across the league are Tuesday.
