Loose dog attack prompts gun fire in Fond du Lac neighborhood
On Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at approximately 12:35 p.m., City of Fond du Lac Police Officers responded to the 200 block of Gillett Street after receiving multiple reports of possible gunshots in the area.
Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of residents, Fond du Lac Police Officers initiated a controlled tactical response, which included the deployment of the department’s armored vehicle. Officers quickly located and safely made contact with the individual involved, a 69-year-old Fond du Lac resident, who was taken into protective custody without incident.
The initial investigation determined the individual had been confronted by multiple loose dogs that had escaped from a fenced yard. During the encounter, the male sustained multiple dog bites and discharged a firearm in an effort to protect himself from further injury.
No other individuals were injured, the dogs were not harmed, and there was no property damage. No other community members were in the immediate area at the time of the incident. The dogs’ owner was located, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The City of Fond du Lac Police Department understands that reports involving firearms can be concerning and wants to reassure the community that the situation was quickly brought under control. Officers’ primary focus was ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
This incident remains under investigation. No additional information is being released at this time.
