Man held in Sheboygan County Detention Center found dead

An inmate death at the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center is being investigated.

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, while performing a security check, a correctional officer observed an inmate who was unresponsive in the shower of the housing unit. The inmate was removed from the shower, and despite lifesaving efforts from correctional staff, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials identified the inmate as 65-year-old Pao Lee, who was awaiting trial, charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree reckless injury for shooting and wounding a 56-year-old man and a toddler in Sheboygan earlier this month.

Lee told authorities he shot the man after finding text messages on his wife’s phone from the man. Lee said his intentions were to kill the man and then himself, but the gun jammed.

As is protocol to stay transparent in cases like this, an outside law enforcement agency will be called in to investigate, and in this case, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office will be working the investigation, along with the Sheboygan County Medical Examiner.

According to court records, Lee was scheduled to appear in court the following day for a status conference.

No further information or details relating to the incident will be released until both agencies complete their investigation.
