Man in country illegally faces felony charges after critically injuring Fond du Lac woman with vehicle
A man in the country illegally is facing a felony charge after striking and seriously injuring a pedestrian in a crash at Johnson and Macy Streets.
District Attorney Eric Toney says Elmer Jose Cardona Bustillo made his initial court appearance after being charged with knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended, causing great bodily harm.
According to the criminal complaint, the crash happened shortly before 5:45 Friday morning, October 9th. Police say a pickup truck traveling east on Johnson Street struck a 50-year-old woman who was crossing in the pedestrian crosswalk at Macy Street.
The woman suffered serious injuries and was initially taken to St. Agnes Hospital before being airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee for additional treatment. A case worker later reported that the woman had suffered multiple injuries and was in critical condition.
The complaint says the driver acknowledged knowing he was not allowed to drive. Investigators also reviewed nearby city camera footage of the collision.
Cash bail was set at 25-thousand dollars, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 23rd.
The charge is a Class I felony, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years and six months if convicted.
United States immigration records show Bustillo is illegally in the United States and was ordered to be removed by an immigration judge in November of 2015.
