Man receives 58 year prison sentence for domestic abuse incident in Fond du Lac

48-year-old Lataye Smith was sentenced to 58 years of initial confinement and 38 years of extended supervision after being convicted of Attempted Homicide, Mayhem, and Battery all with domestic violence with a dangerous weapon enhancers in August of this year.

The case comes from an incident that occurred in January of 2023 in the 100 block of South Main Street in Fond du Lac when Smith attempted to slit the throat and wrist of a woman with a box cutter while in a car. The woman was able to fight Smith off and escaped to safety at the Fond du Lac Police Department.

Smith fled from the area, but was later captured in Chicago.

The case was investigated by the City of Fond du Lac Police Department and prosecuted by Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney.
