New school year is upon us so extra attention needed for drivers and pedestrians

Wisconsin transportation and education officials are reminding drivers to watch out for students as the new school year gets underway.

The agencies are reminding motorists to slow down in school zones, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, avoid distractions and obey crossing guards.

Drivers are also reminded to stop when school buses have their red warning lights flashing, and to slow down and remain alert when buses are displaying amber lights.

Families are encouraged to talk with young drivers about safe driving around school parking lots and to teach children proper bus-stop and street-crossing safety.
