Son’s of the American Legion look to continue Flag Presentation into next year

the Son’s of the American Legion – Post 454 of Mt. Calvary continue to grow their flag presentation that they bring to area elementary schools throughout the area.

They say as discussions of the American flag has come up over the past few years, they realized the importance of teaching the younger generations what the flag truly represents.

Members of the Legion and Son’s of the American Legion discussed doing some kind of flag presentation at the elementary schools for 5th grade students and the idea for the program was born.

In the 2023 school year the group did six presentations and in 2024 that number grew to fourteen. In 2025 the group hopes to grow to 22, which will include private and public elementary schools from North Fond du Lac to Eden east to New Holstein.

The group of five Sons and four to six Veterans show students how to address the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, discuss the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, and also do the military folding of the flag and explain what each fold represent. After the presentation, students get to partake in a Q&A session about the flag or ask the veterans about their time in service.

As a parting gift, students get a flag key ring with the groups information on the back side to hang on their backpacks. Funds for the keyrings come from donations and fundraisers. The next fundraiser the group has planned is a Brat Fry on February 15th and 16th from 11:00 to 5:00 at Shakey Joes in Mt Calvary.
