Stove fire damages Fond du Lac apartment

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a report of a fire in an apartment Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 405 north Peters Avenue.
At 5:37 p.m. the Fond du Lac County Communications Center received a call that there was fire on the stove at the address.
Upon arrival fire crews reported that the fire was out, saying the fire was extinguished by two FireStop Rangehood Fire Suppressors. These are small canisters that are installed above the stove and release an extinguishing agent to suppress a fire should one start. Though the fire was out prior to the departments arrival, fire did damage the stove and cabinets above it.
The department says had these canisters not been installed, the fire would have spread quickly and the damage would have been much worse. Fire crews checked for any extension and cleared the apartment of smoke.
The department noted the apartment had no working smoke detectors and installed 2 of them.
The fire department says this incident is a good reminder to never leave any cooking unattended.
