Strong winds create problems in area

Strong winds Thursday, February 6, 2025, are being blamed for several issues around Fond du Lac County.

Several reports of trees and wires were reported being blown down onto area roads causing traffic issues. A check on Aliant energy’s website Friday morning shows all power has been restored to any outages that had occurred.

On Lake Winnebago, the wind caused havoc as videos on social media showed numerous sturgeon spearing shacks being blown across the ice, with some ending up in open water. Thursday morning was the first day holes could be cut for spearing, and with no snow to pack in the shanties, the wind was easily able to blow them away. According to Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s logs, someone reported an iceboat was blown from the lake up onto their property on Linden Beach Road.

And a semi was blown onto it’s side Thursday on Highway 151 between Waupun and Beaver Dam, blocking both southbound lanes. It’s unknown if the driver of that semi sustained any injuries in the incident.

Officially the peak gust in Fond du Lac County, measured at the Fond du Lac County Airport was 56 mph, recorded just before 6 PM. A wind advisory was in effect for much of the area during this time.
