This week is Crash Responder Safety Week
Drivers are being reminded to slow down and move over when approaching emergency scenes as Wisconsin recognizes Crash Responder Safety Week.
The statewide observance runs November 2nd through the 6th, with this year’s theme being “Slow Down, Move Over. Lives Are on the Line.”
The week focuses on the dangers faced by police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow truck operators and other workers who respond to crashes and emergencies along Wisconsin roadways.
Officials say distracted driving and motorists failing to move over can put those responders in danger and lead to additional crashes.
Wisconsin law requires drivers approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights to move out of the lane closest to the vehicle when it is safe to do so.
If there isn’t another lane available, or a driver cannot safely move over, they must slow down.
The law also extends protections to certain disabled vehicles stopped along the roadway with hazard lights, emergency warning devices or people attending to the vehicle.
Wisconsin law also prohibits handheld cell phone use within designated emergency response areas.
Officials say the message is simple: when you see flashing lights ahead, pay attention, slow down and give those working along the roadway room to do their jobs safely.
