Walgreens to close numerous stores nationwide – including Fond du Lac

Walgreens corporate hasn’t announced an exact number of stores it will be closing but says there will be “significant” planned shutdowns for underperforming branches across the nation, as part of an ongoing optimization strategy set to unfold over several years.

CEO Tim Wentworth indicated that the impending store closures bear significant weight, making up a “meaningful percent” of the approximately one-fourth of less profitable locations.

The spotlight during this shake-up will be primarily on non-profitable stores, those located too closely together, or stores struggling with ongoing theft problems, Wentworth stated.

In addressing the tough business conditions, Wentworth concluded; “We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the U.S. consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics which have eroded pharmacy margins,” and that “Our results and outlook reflect these headwinds.”

According to the website usearch.com, on the list of stores to close is the location at 20 west Pioneer Road in Fond du Lac. KFIZ has a list of questions into corporate but has yet to get a reply. We will update this story with any specific information on this closing when and if they reply.

Other stores in southern Wisconsin include two locations in West Bend and one in Madison.

This comes on the heels of Mercury Marine announcing 300 positions being laid off and Charter Communications closing down their regional support center in Fond du Lac, causing 122 people to lose their jobs.
